On August 12, 2019, the Federal government officially published a rule about public benefits that harms low-income immigrant families who are on the way to a green card. The new rule is scheduled to go into effect on October 15, 2019.

- Use of public benefits will not automatically affect you
- This does not apply to every immigrant. Exempt immigrants include: refugees; asylees; survivors of trafficking, domestic violence, or other serious crimes (T or U visa applicants/holders); VAWA selfpetitioners; special immigrant juveniles; and certain people paroled into the U.S. Benefits received when people are in one of these statuses will not be counted against them
- This does not apply to lawful permanent residents (green card holders)
- This does not apply to citizens
- There is no “public charge” test for applying for citizenship
