Volunteer to teach English or Citizenship class

For new immigrants, learning English is a first step to full participation in American life or becoming a citizen. Help them take that first step by volunteering to teach English or Citizenship classes. English classes help students improve their communication skills. Citizenship classes help students prepare for the U.S. citizenship test. Volunteers work in teams to plan the curriculum and teach the classes. This fun and rewarding experience gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. Individuals with an interest in education careers are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

Must have good communication skills and a strong desire to help and work with new immigrants
Be available to teach two hours per week
Prior teaching experience preferred
Have a desire to further develop teaching skills
Must attend teacher training and meetings
Bilingual skills are a plus
Preference given to volunteers who can commit to teaching at least two semesters

Help Youth Become Community Leaders

Are you interested in social justice, Asian American community issues, youth empowerment?

The Chinese Progressive Association is looking for Shared Stories volunteer facilitators. Shared Stories educates and engages youth (ages 15-21) in social activism to become community leaders - focusing on issues important to the immigrant community, especially Chinatown, while connecting to all communities.

In this fun and rewarding experience, you get in-depth experience working with youth while integrating it into the overall organization and local community.

What do facilitators do?

Serve as positive role models
Work with team to plan and conduct regular activities for students
Attend relevant community events with students

Other things to know about being a facilitator:

Have good communication, leadership skills, and a willingness to further develop these skills
Can attend program sessions (Sundays from 10:30am to 1:00pm) and facilitator meetings (time to be decided)
Previous experience leading youth groups (ages 15-21)
Preference given to those who can volunteer for two semesters
